This amazing sanctuary of turtles is a heaven for wildlife enthusiasts. Every year, thousands of turtles flock to Ras al Jinz Reserve between May and September for nesting.
There are guided tours for the visitors to experience this phenomenon twice daily, at dusk when turtles emerge on the beach and dig holes to lay their eggs and at dawn when they return. The baby turtles hatch in 55 days. After dodging the preying foxes, these hatchlings reach the sea.

The guided tours are conducted carefully and responsibly to avoid disturbing the turtles. Only a few tourists are allowed at a time, and flash photography is strictly prohibited. Therefore, making reservations in advance is suggested to avoid any inconvenience.
Arabian Oryx Sanctuary
The Arabian Oryx Sanctuary has now been renamed Al Wusta Wildlife Reserve. It is spread over an area of almost 27,500 square kilometres and is known for its Arabian Oryx population. The sanctuary was once a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but in 2007, the government turned 90% of the area into an oil drilling field, and then UNESCO delisted it.
The Arabian oryx, thought to inspire the myth of the unicorn, is a desert antelope which became extinct in 1972 when the poachers killed the last oryx. Many years later, it was reintroduced in the wild through a special breeding program. Now Al Wusta has a population of 750 Arabian oryx.
