If you have a quote from another oman car rental 4x4 company, you must ask them to send you their T&Cs. We are completely open and honest with you. We tell you exactly what our T&Cs are. Many of the “bigger” oman 4x4 rental companies, do not allow their 4x4 cars to be driven off-road.

If you do not book a 4WD vehicle or 4x4 vehicles through us, you might end up renting a 4WD vehicle from an International 4x4 Rent a Car Company and the Terms & Conditions could state “Our 4WD Vehicles are for paved roads only”. My goodness why would you want to rent a 4WD car or 4x4 car if you cannot go off the paved road.

Nomad Tours highly recommend a 4WD car and 4x4 rental particularly if you are camping but there is no point if you hire a 4x4 car and then cannot take it off-road. The Tailgate tents do not have a sewn in groundsheet (floor) so like the roof top tents they can be erected anywhere the car can go. For sleeping in these tents it is best to sleep on camping cots which we provide. Because the tents are secured to the car they are very stable in windy conditions and make much less noise than other types of tent. They make an ideal base camp for Kite Surfers in the Summer And if you choose the Pathfinder or the Yukon 2 people can sleep in the back of the car in comfort.

However when travelling with 4 adults or 2 adults and 2 teenage kids for example there is not enough room to all sleep in a roof top tent. In this case you could take a tailgate tent if the car is compatible (the rear door must open vertically). These tailgate tents have a substantial headroom so it is very comfortable for two adults (or more) to sleep on camping cot beds.

Or better choose one of our 4x4 vehicles that have two Roof top tents installed. Both the GMC Yukon and the GWM Poer have two roof top tents. In fact we equip these cars for five. Because one or two people can comfortably sleep in the back of the Yukon or the bed of the Poer.

Precautions before Driving 4x4 Off-road

Before driving off-road in Oman be sure to read the terms and conditions carefully. Specifically we allow you to drive into the Wahiba sands and the Rub Al Khali. FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY in the Wahiba sands we allow you to drive to the “permanent” desert camps ( you should pre-book). If you wish to drive beyond the desert camps and into areas where there is no phone coverage you must take one of our desert guides.

4x4 Camper Group

Anyone booking with Nomad Tours will be invited into our Chat group NomadVisor and through this forum people often get together to cross the Desert. The cost for 4 cars is only 140 rials so only 35 Rials for each car. This is a very small price to ensure yours and your family’s safety.

Desert Crossing on 4x4 Vehicles

If you cross the desert with one of our Desert guides you will not need the Nomad Off-road kit which consists of a Compressor, a Tyre Deflator, Pressure Gauge, Kinetic rope and Sand-board. But you should definitely take this Kit if you are going to Bar Al Hickman and it is good insurance if you get stuck on a remote beach such as the Sugar Dunes .

4x4 Rentals with Experienced Guide

Nomad cars do go into the Rub Al Khali (The Empty Quarter) but never do this alone. This for groups with an experienced guide equipped with satellite phone Jerry cans off-road recovery equipment

Nomad Terms & Conditions for Driving Off-Road

• 4WD cars can be driven Off-Road but with some limitations: which are imposed for your safety.
• They can be driven into the desert to a pre-booked desert Camp. But they can only be driven beyond these camps with a Nomad guide.
• Nomad Cars CANNOT BE DRIVEN TO BAR AL HICKMAN without a guide to escort you to the Lagoon. Too many cars have got stuck there and a lot of damage has been incurred. Note a local guide to escort you one way costs 25 Rials.
• We do not permit Nomad cars to drive along the terrible roads to the Salma plateau. We will permit you to drive up the road from Qalhat, to a point where you can no longer see the sea behind you. See page 232 of the Off-road Explorer book. The other routes in the area are in very poor condition and too much damage is done to our cars.
• When Off-road NEVER drive through a flowing Wadi THE CAR IS NOT INSURED FOR THIS.
• When driving off-road in 4 wheel drive mode if High gear box is engaged do not drive faster than 80 Km/hr.
• If the above speeds are exceeded it is possible that the gearbox oil overheats, if it does stop and let the oil cool down.
• Any damage/repair costs due to these consequences will have to be borne by Lessee.
• We do not commit to providing assistance off road.
• It you do get into trouble or get stuck in the sand for example. Police or third party assistance might be required any costs incurred must be paid by the Lessee.

Optional Extras

• Extra driver charges = OMR 2 per day.
• Baby seat = OMR 2 per day.
• Additional Km over Free allowance 0.1 Rial per Km.

General Terms & Conditions

• To confirm your booking, a deposit of 250 Euros is required. This deposit will be fully refunded upon the car's return, provided there are no traffic or parking fines, no violations of red traffic lights, all terms and conditions have been followed, and the car is returned in the same condition as when it was rented.
• Excess in case of an accident is 300 Oman Rials if the ROP (Royal Oman Police) report that it is "your" fault.
• This Excess can be reduced to 150 Oman rials by taking out EXTENDED INSURANCE OMR 5 per day.
• For the Peak period, 20 Dec to 07 Jan a surcharge is applicable of OMR 5 per day.
• VAT (Value Added Tax) @5% to be added.
• The rental is charged per calendar day, the full daily rate applies regardless of the pickup or drop-off time.
• Damage of windscreen and tyres are not covered under the insurance.
• Tyre puncture repair is the responsibility of the Lessee at his/her cost.
• If a tyre is found to be unrepairable a new tyre cost will have to be borne by the Lessee.
• All our cars are Non-Smoking. If renter smokes inside the vehicle OMR 50 will be charged as valet services charge.
• In case of an accident and the vehicle is immovable we will help you by coming to the site – additional costs may apply as service fee due to transportation costs from Muscat etc.
• In case of an accident limited towing costs are also included in the insurance costs – depending on the location some part of the towing charge may have to be borne by the Lessee.
• Please note, our tent pickup hours are from 08:00 to 18:00. Any pickups outside these hours will incur a 25 Rials fee. For car drop-offs, our working hours extend until 20:00.

Payment Policy

• We will need a valid Credit card with a copy of the driver’s license.
• Visa & Master Card are ok but they must have a minimum of 6 months’ validity. We cannot accept Debit Cards. If paying by Credit Card 3.5 percent will added.
• If you want to pay by cash please pay the full amount as per the quote
• Be careful it is easy to get speeding fines in Oman. These might only be notified after you have returned the car.
• To cover for potential speeding /parking fines a deposit of 200 Euros is required

Cancellation Policy

• You can cancel your booking at any time. However, refunds are typically not issued but may be considered for compassionate reasons at the discretion of Nomad Tours.
